This is an excellent reference for students of English or Spanish. The book is attractive and durable, with a vinyl cover, and convenient size. The type is readable, with the word to be defined printed in blue for easy lookup. I have used this dictionary extensively in my adult ESL classes and the students have really made use of them.

A Dictionary of Chemistry (Oxford Paperback Reference)
Published in Paperback by Oxford University Press (July, 1996)
Authors: John Daintith and Oxford University Press
Average review score:

An indispensable A-level chemistry guide
This A-level chemistry dictionary was a life-saver during my GCE chemistry course and I highly recommend this book to anyone taking chemistry for a degree in university. Do note that there are a few errors definition wise, e.g. the definition of the Rf value. But the new third edition (this one is the second edition) has all that sorted out. So. Go get it!

A Dictionary of Concepts in Nmr (Biophysical Techniques Series (Oxford, England), 1.)
Published in Hardcover by Oxford University Press (January, 1995)
Author: S. W. Homans
Average review score:

General Reference Book
This is a great general reference book on NMR. Vastly superior to "The Handbook of Nuclear Magnetic Resonance" by Ray Freeman. Save your money and buy this book instead. Every person that uses NMR should have this book. This book also provides a general review of the mathematics used in NMR.

A Dictionary of Irish Mythology (Oxford Paper Reference Series)
Published in Paperback by Oxford University Press (January, 1992)
Author: Peter Berresford Ellis
Average review score:

A Readable Encyclopedic "Dictionary of Irish Mythology"
This Book, as is Peter Berresford Ellis's Dictionaty of Celtic Mythology, is in my opinon deserve 6+ stars, not 5. "Irish Mythology" is not really covered in his "Celtic mythology book, Celtic Mythology is really a continuation of of this book, covering a much broader scope. I have over a dozen "Dictionaries and Encyclopedias of Celtic Mythology, Legend and Lore" and the scope and breadth of the information covered by Mr. Ellis is excellent. As you look up each entry, a full explanation is given, and if your curosity is peaked, it is easy to look up all other referances that are mentined in the text. Stories of Irish mythology, that I didn't fully grasp before, are very clear and understandable.

A Dictionary of Political Biography (Oxford Paperback Reference)
Published in Paperback by Oxford University Press (May, 1998)
Author: Dennis Kavanagh
Average review score:

A Reference for Politicos
Quite simply, this is a fairly comprehensive biographical reference of those who play roles in politics that are in any way visible on the international level. Mostly, it is helpful for those obscure references to long-dead and/or faraway politicians whose names sound, perhaps, familiar. I recommend this book as a companion to political writings generally.

A Dictionary of Scientists (Oxford Paperback Reference)
Published in Paperback by Oxford University Press (May, 1999)
Authors: John Daintith, Derek Gjertsen, Oxford University Press, and Oxford
Average review score:

A Dictionary of Scientists
For scientists of all ages this is a great book with concise
descriptions of 100's of scientists from the Greeks onwards. A brief description of their family background, when born and died is followed by all you need to know, about their main scientific endeavors. There are few obvious omissions
but I must bring to task the editors for not listing perhaps the greatest British chemist of the nineteenth century - Sir Joseph Wilson Swan (inventor of the electric light bulb; modern photographic paper and the production of polymeric fibres).

At this price you will not find a better quick reference book.

A Dictionary of Statistics (Oxford Paperback Reference)
Published in Paperback by Oxford University Press (October, 2002)
Authors: Graham Upton and Ian Cook
Average review score:

accessible dictionary of terms and famous statisticians
Two English statisticians have compiled this list of terms, abbreviations, famous probabilists and statisticians that is accessible to experts, beginners and practitioners in all fields that use statistical methods and probability. It is very current and competitive with other dictionaries on this topic including the one that Cambidge University Press puts out. A nice feature of the handy paperback book is its low price. Published in 2002 it is the most current dictionary of its type and includes terms from computational statistics and operations research. So you will find terms like simplex methods and figures from operations research like George Dantzig in addition to famous statisticians such as R. A. Fisher and probabilists like Markov and Kolmogorov. It also contains many names of statistical societies, software packages and professional journals and their acronyms.

Doctor Faustus and Other Plays (Oxford World's Classics)
Published in Paperback by Oxford University Press (September, 1998)
Authors: Christopher Marlowe, Eric Rasmussen, and David Bevington
Average review score:

Yes, the English Renaissance CAN be humorous!
Christopher Marlowe is a genius. This thorough, Oxfordiancompilation of his best known plays contains Tamburlaine the Great parts one and two, the Tragical History of Doctor Faustus in its original A-text and its later B-text, The Jew of Malta, and Edward II. The beauty of these dramas lies in the fact that they're short but powerful reading pieces. In five acts Marlowe was able to generate a story complete with action, classical allusions, and a bawdy humor one might not expect from otherwise generally classified stuffy English Renaissance drama. This book contains an exhaustive introduction that explains many details of the publication dates of the plays and the differences between versions (Faustus). It also contains a thorough section for notes that further explain the texts. Finally, it contains a glossary of the commonly used words from the texts. The bottom line? This book is a great read--it's funny (I can't begin to stress that enough), and you will appreciate Marlowe's wit and talent just as much as William Shakespeare did. Buy it today!
